Staff at a Co Offaly nursing home who have staged a sit-in for the past seven weeks over unpaid wages, now fear they will never get their money after the Revenue Commissioners yesterday confiscated items from a golf course on the same complex.

Tullybeg Retirement Village, at Rahan, Co Offaly, closed last month with the board of directors citing financial troubles.

One of the directors - Ted Cunningham - was arrested in Cork during the course of a money-laundering investigation in January.

Another prominent figure in the home - Cathy Armstrong - was also arrested in that investigation.

Yesterday, bailiffs from the Revenue Commissioners moved into Beechlawn golf course and driving range, which is housed in the same complex.

The bailiffs spent the afternoon confiscating items from buildings attached to the golf course.

Three people - Ted Cunningham, Irene Johnson, and Liam Grennan - are listed as directors of both companies.

More than 50 staff who worked in the nursing home have been engaged in a sit-in for almost seven weeks and say they will not leave until they get the €144,000 owed to them.

But they now fear they may not get their money.

"Liam Grennan has told us time and again that we would get our money, but we haven't got it yet," said a spokesperson.

"We have been strung along and if they would just come out and say they are not going to pay us, we could pursue other avenues to try to get our cash."

Mr Grennan was unavailable for comment yesterday, and the Revenue Commissioners declined to comment.

A local auctioneer currently has the 58-acre Tullybeg complex up for sale with an asking price of €6.5 million.
