Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary today failed to attend a press conference in London to announce plans to buy €5.5 billion in planes from Boeing, because his Ryanair flight was cancelled.

Mr O'Leary had to stay at Dublin Airport after his company cancelled flights to and from London Stansted due to adverse weather conditions in Britain.

British aviation authorities said ice and snow on the runways made it too dangerous for aircraft to land at Stansted.

He was due to announce the company's acquisition of 22 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, and options on another 78 planes, in a ?5.5 billion deal. Today the airline also unveiled a deal to buy Dutch airline KLM's budget carrier Buzz for ?23.9 million.The announcement was made instead by Ryanair's sales and marketing manager, Ms Sinead Finn.
