Lusaka - A summit of African leaders has elected former Ivory Coast foreign minister Mr Amara Essy the new secretary general of the Organisation of African Unity. His job will be to steer the pan-African body through its crucial transition period into an EU-style African Union.
The OAU summit in Lusaka is to be the organisation's last. The African Union came into being on May 26th after 37 OAU members ratified the founding documents.
