Local objectors and Clare County Council's planners stand in the way of an elected member of the council receiving £1 million from a proposed land sale.

The Fine Gael councillor, Mr Sonny Scanlan, is hoping to sell 11 acres of his property to a developer on the outskirts of Quin village, nine miles from Ennis. However, the deal will go through only if the council grants planning permission for 60 dormer bungalows on the land.

The application has attracted a small number of objections from locals, who say the development is out of character with Quin village. The council's planning department endorsed this view.

In response, the developers have made a number of changes to the plan, proposing to reduce the number of houses to 45. Mr Scanlan said he would absent himself from any council meeting to discuss the application to avoid any potential conflict of interest.
