Twenty-nine per cent of departures and 33 per cent of arrivals at Dublin Airport in the last quarter of 2000 were delayed by more than 15 minutes.
Dublin is 10th in a league of 27 European airports, ranked by proportion of departing flights which were delayed.
Oslo had the fewest delays, with 11.5 per cent of departures and 15.5 per cent of arrivals delayed by more than 15 minutes. Madrid came out worst, with 35.6 per cent of departures and 40.7 per cent of arrivals delayed.
However, when it comes to average length of delay, Dublin fared poorly. Compiled by the Association of European Airlines (AEA), the figures show the average departure delay at Dublin was 59 minutes, second only to Larnaca Airport, where the average delay was 59.9 minutes.
The average arrival delay at Dublin was 70 minutes, again second-worst, with only Milan Linate clocking up higher average delays (78.8 minutes).
Just over a quarter of AEA member-airlines recorded delays of more than 15 minutes last year. This compares with 30.3 per cent in 1999.
Overall figures for last year put Dublin 16th in the league of 27 airports when it comes to the proportion of departing flights delayed for more than 15 minutes.
In all, 24 per cent of departures in 2000 were delayed, with 28 per cent of arrivals delayed.
The reasons for the delayed departures included air traffic control, maintenance/equipment failure, reactionary (late arrivals), flight operations and weather.
