Thousands of RUC officers are reported to have sought counselling and careers advice following the Patten report on police reform in Northern Ireland, according to the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust which was set up a year ago to help officers deal with the proposed changes.

About 80 per cent of officers examined by clinical psychologists were suffering from posttraumatic stress or at least some of its symptoms, the trust said.
