Oil costs drive up EU producer price rises

Euro zone producer prices (PPI)in January rose 0

Euro zone producer prices (PPI)in January rose 0.8 per cent from December 2002 and were up two per cent year-on-year, the EU's Eurostat statistics office said.

The PPI is a key measure of inflation at the wholesale level. Economists had forecast a month-on-month rise of one per cent and an increase of 2.2 per cent from a year earlier.

The increase in underlying inflation at the wholesale level could impact further on the eurozone jobless rate as it pushes up manufacturers' costs.

Unemployment was 8.5 per cent in December, unchanged from the previous month but up from 8.1 per cent compared with the previous year.
