OJ Simpson will appear in court today in connection with an armed robbery involving sport memorabilia.
The former American football star is charged with 10 offences, including kidnapping, following the
incident at the Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday night.
Simpson (60) is being held without bail in Clark County Detention Centre and faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Simpson's lawyer, Yale Galanter, said he was preparing a bond motion and will ask for Simpson's release later today. "If it was anyone other than OJ Simpson, he would have been released by now," he said.
Simpson has said he and others were retrieving items that belonged to him. He told police no guns were involved.
Las Vegas police said two firearms and other evidence were seized at a private residence on Sunday. Simpson was booked on five felony counts, including suspicion of assault and robbery with a deadly weapon.
District Attorney David Roger filed those charges and added five other offences yesterday, including kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, according to court documents.
According to the charges, Simpson and the others went to the hotel room under the pretext of brokering a deal with Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong, two longtime collectors of Simpson memorabilia.
Once in the room, Simpson prevented one of the collectors from calling police on his mobile phone "by ripping it out of Fromong's hand" while one or more accomplices pointed or displayed a handgun.
