The Army bomb disposal unit has destroyed an early 20th century grenade found in a garden in south Dublin today.
The Defence Forces deployed a team to Chelmsford Avenue in Ranelagh following a request from the Gardaí.
The badly corroded grenade, which is thought to date from the War of Independence, was discovered by a local resident whilst carrying out excavation work in his garden.
The team arrived on scene at 5.30pm and examined the grenade in situ.

The grenade was then rendered safe for transportation and brought to nearby Ringsend Beach where it was subsequently destroyed by means of controlled explosion.
The scene was declared safe at 6.50pm.
