The North's Police Ombudsman has been asked to investigate the death of a man who jumped into Carlingford Lough after his car was stopped by police.

Nuala O'Loan's investigators are to examine the circumstances of the death, as is normal procedure when police officers are involved.

According to reports, the PSNI was informed by a taxi driver in the Warrenpoint area of Co Down that a man had been seen speeding at about 5am yesterday.

The car was stopped near the outdoor swimming pool in the town following a police chase, but the man ran off in the direction of the lough.
