Gear: you don't necessarily have to go to the expense of buying ski suits, they can be hired along with skis, boots and poles. A warm anorak and waterproof trousers will do just as well. Most important item is a good pair of gloves and a hat.

Lessons: a must, skiing is not something you can just pick up. Four two-hour lessons in Kilternan cost £60. All ski operators can arrange lessons with your booking.

Food: Austrian food is good quality, very hearty and warming. Lots of meat and potatoes and good home-made soups. You will need it as the altitude and activity increases your appetite hugely. Prices are about the same as Ireland. There's even a McDonalds in Zell am See.

Hotels: Austrian hotels are very clean and comfortable though not necessarily luxurious. Most packages are half board, which is just as well, as finding the energy to cook after a day on the slopes could be hard.

Nightlife: Apres-ski is party time. Every night it's compulsory to party in some crazy nightclub or other. Closing time is flexible and drinks cost the same as here or even a bit less. Shots of various cocktails are very popular.

Health: if you follow your lessons carefully the worst injury you will end up with is - hopefully - bruising. Most accidents seem to happen when people crash into each other or skis get entangled. Use your rear end as a brake, and get those skis up. Courtesy on the slopes: fast skiers must give way to slower ones.
