An Irishman who was shot dead with his wife in his suburban home in South Africa on Monday evening has been named as Kevin McGuirk, who was originally from Dublin.

The bodies of Mr McGuirk (54) and his South African wife Kim (34) were found yesterday morning in the bedroom of their Alberton home near Johannesburg.

The discovery was made by the authorities after the deceased woman's father, who has been arrested in connection with the crime, contacted the police.

Police confirmed a 75-year-old man had been arrested and will appear in Alberton magistrate's court tomorrow.

The accused has been charged with two counts of murder. It is understood a handgun belonging to the accused was found at the scene.

Mr McGuirk was managing director of Africa Diving, a scuba diving company based in Alberton that operated tours to well-known diving spots off Africa’s southern and eastern coasts.

The Irish embassy in Pretoria is providing assistance to Mr McGuirk’s family and it is believed one of his relatives has travelled from Ireland to South Africa since the tragedy occurred.
