Nearly one in ten of the Republic’s prison population are to be let out of prison for varying amounts of time over the Christmas period, it was announced today.

Most of the 295 people being freed are nearing the end of their sentence or serving short terms for minor offences.

A statement from the Department of Justice said the prisoners would be allowed out of jail for periods ranging from a few hours to 12 days. Some of those released will be accompanied by prison escorts.

They are being freed under the Criminal Justice Act for "compassionate and humane" reasons.
