No agreement in principle has yet been reached between the European Tour and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club to change the qualifying system for the Open championship.
"We are having a review and it is premature to say that," said Peter Dawson, secretary of the Royal and Ancient Club today.
Criticisms were levelled last week by players including Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance and fellow Scot Gordon Brand Jnr about a process which saw them having to decide whether to pull out of the Scottish Open after making the halfway cut to play in the final qualifying tournament.
Both elected to stay at Loch Lomond, but then failed to grab one of the 15 spots on offer there and Brand said they were being "raped by the system".
Ken Schofield, the tour's executive director, was linked to a report on Monday that the agreement in principle was in place to bring final qualifying forward a week, in line with the US Open.
But Dawson commented today that that is not yet the case.
