"You're the man, Jeffrey," shouts a man in the crowd lining the main street of Dunmurry, Co Antrim. The MP salutes with his white-gloved hand as the parade veers to the right, following the signpost for the Belfast Bible College.
The anti-agreement Ulster Unionist Jeffrey Donaldson, yesterday led the Orange Order demonstration from Derriaghy.
Several hundred members of the district lodges of Glenavy, Aghalee, Lisburn, Magheragall, Ballinderry, Derriaghy and Hillsborough enjoyed warm sunshine along the three-mile route to Dunmurray.
Later, heavy showers dampened clothes but spirits remained resilient as a portion of the large crowd gathered in a corner of the field for prayers.
A special reflection was offered for Mr Donaldson, for his role in the current political negotiations. "Our prayers go with him to stop the appeasement from his leader, David Trimble. We need Jeffrey there for us to make sure that he gives no more away," boomed a voice over the loudspeakers.
A "boom-boom" from a Lambeg drum would have been appropriate following an uncharacteristic moment of stand-up comedy from Mr Donaldson. He said that at this week's talks Martin McGuinness had told the UUP that when unionists spoke about the stick and carrot, Sinn Fein felt they were being called donkeys.
"Well, guess what, Martin, the way you're acting at the moment it would be hard to tell the difference."
But there would be no more hee-hawing over guns, Mr Donaldson added. "There will be no more government with Sinn Fein/IRA if they don't decommission their illegal weapons . . . bottom line, period, full stop."
