The company added 1.6 million new customers over the period, swelling its customer base to 37.1 million.

Orange UK added 320,000 new customers in the third quarter, 68 per cent of them contract customers. Group turnover increased to £6.9 billion sterling.

Orange's UK customer base was up 47 per cent when compared with the third quarter of last year.

The total of 12.2 million customers at the end of September made it the UK's largest mobile phone operator in terms of active customers.

The company's French customer base reached 16.6 million, a 32 per cent rise from 12.6 million in the third quarter last year.
