Relatives of a man beaten to death in Northern Ireland last year were today told police on both sides of the border are committed to catching his killers.

PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde met members of the Quinn family in Newry to discuss the investigation into the murder of Paul Quinn (21) in October last year.

Mr Quinn, from south Armagh, was beaten to death by masked men wielding iron bars and pickaxe handles after he was lured to a cattle shed near Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.

The attack was blamed on members of the IRA, though the Independent Monitoring Commission said it believed individuals with IRA connections operating without the sanction of the leadership were involved.

Mr Quinn's mother Briege said the meeting with Sir Hugh went well and that he had confirmed the PSNI and gardai were working closely.

“He reassured us that no stone would be left unturned,” she said.

Mrs Quinn said the family would continue its fight for justice.

Dolores Kelly of the SDLP said: “We wanted to ensure that the resources are there for the investigation, despite the financial circumstances facing the PSNI.

“There should be no let-up in the hunt to find those responsible for this brutal murder.”

Sinn Féin has condemned the killing and appealed for people to co-operate with the police investigation, but Ms Kelly said she believed there were still those in the community who had not come forward with information.

Also in attendance at the meeting with the chief constable was Jim McAllister, a former Sinn Fein member who has led the Quinn family’s justice campaign.
