In a statement yesterday after the sentencing of Father Gus Griffin, the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost Fathers) said:
"We are deeply saddened by the accounts of sexual abuse of young children by a member of our congregation.
"The crimes and the particular context in which they occurred, as described in the court today, are most disturbing. The priest involved has broken a precious trust placed in him by children, families, communities and his congregation. "We wish to express our profound sympathy to those who have been abused and their families. It is our hope that the conclusion of today's proceedings will in some way help in their healing process.
"We recognise that the relationship of trust between priest and people is damaged wherever abuse occurs. Our congregation will make every effort to reaffirm the trust and friendship we have established in our work over the years with all sections of Irish society.
"We ask those who wish to have assistance and counselling in matters relating to this case to contact the independent FAOISEAMH helpline: Freephone 1800 331 2134, or from Britain and Northern Ireland: 0800 973 272."
