Italian Prime Minister Mr Giuliano Amato today presented the resignation of his government to President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, officials said.
President Ciampi is widely expected to ask billionaire media magnate Mr Silvio Berlusconi, whose coalition won elections on May 13th, to form a new government within the next few days.
Mr Berlusconi succeeded in having his candidates for the posts of president of the Senate and speaker of the lower house of parliament accepted on yesterday and today, effectively clearing the way for the president's next move.
Mr Amato's outgoing center-left government was formed in April last year.
