Geneva - The death toll from floods in southern Somalia has risen to more than 1,000, with people clinging to tree branches as rains washed away homes, bridges and roads, the UN said yesterday.
Ms Madeleine Moulin-Acevedo, of the UN Department for Humanitarian Affairs, said the floods had displaced 200,000 people in Somalia.
The death toll, based on figures from the UN humanitarian co-ordinator in Somalia, is double that of a previous figure released on Thursday by an aid agency, Care International.
The flooding has been caused by the Shabelle and Juba rivers bursting their banks following fierce rains in recent weeks. Relief workers say the worst-affected areas were around the town of Bardera.
