Over 1.7m new iPhones sold

Apple said today it sold over 1

Apple said today it sold over 1.7 million iPhone 4 phones in just three days last week, making for its most successful launch yet.

In a statement, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs apologised to "customers who were turned away" because the company did not have enough supply.

"This is the most successful product launch in Apple's history," Mr Jobs said.

Apple did not say whether the figure included pre-orders made on the company's website and in stores before the phone's official June 24th store launch.

Introduced in 2007, the iPhone is now Apple’s top-selling product, with more than 50 million of the devices sold since its launch, even after users reported glitches and dropped calls with previous versions of the device.

Shares in Apple stayed around $266.70 in early trade after closing at that level in regular Nasdaq trade on Friday.
