The recruitment campaign for the Police Service of Northern Ireland, which began on Friday, has attracted interest from more than 10,000 people, but Mr Gerry Adams has insisted that Sinn Fein can still not endorse the new force.

Consensia, which is running the campaign, received more than 10,000 calls seeking information on the new service. More than 5,500 of them asked for application packs, 300 of whom were from the Republic.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland is seeking to attract 240 recruits in this campaign. Mr Philip Heaton of Consensia expressed confidence that the requirement for 50:50 Catholic/Protestant recruits would be met.
