Rock singer Ozzy Osbourne (55) remains on a ventilator in intensive care today after undergoing emergency surgery. Doctors hope Ozzy, who is recovering from a quad bike crash, will begin breathing unassisted again soon.
The unlikely star of MTV's hit reality show The Osbournes, suffered a fractured vertebra, eight fractured ribs and a broken collar bone in the accident in woodland at his English country mansion near Chalfont St Giles, Berkshire.
Today doctors at Wexham Park Hospital said he was in a "comfortable condition" and said they hoped to be able to take him off the ventilator as soon as possible.
The blood vessels supplying his left arm were crushed in the accident when the bike rolled on top of him. He had managed to stagger back to his house to alert staff.
But surgeons said the damage had now been repaired and also said his neck injury was not dangerous. They said they expected his improvement to be steady.
Outside the hospital, medical director Dr Dick Jack said today: "He's doing very well. He's comfortable and had a comfortable night and the vital signs are perfectly normal.
"The plan for today is to wake him up, as he's been sedated while he's been on the ventilator.
"And the next thing will be to try and get him off the ventilator, get the tube from out of his throat, get his sedation down and then we will know a lot more about how he feels."
Ozzy was visited by his wife Sharon, who flew in from their home in Los Angeles yesterday, but he was unable to speak after his treatment and also has a supportive neck collar on.
He had taken the time off to ride the quad bike after promoting his Christmas single, a duet version with daughter Kelly of his old Black Sabbath song Changes.
Kelly and Sharon are staying at the £3 million Berkshire retreat but there was no sign of them at the hospital yet today.
