Power Leisure, which trades as Paddy Power Bookmakers, has reported a 60.7 per cent increase in its operating profit for the half year to the end of June.

The company said its results for the first six months of the year show an operating profit -excluding its online operations - of €9.8 million.

The group’s turnover rose 18.6 per cent to €206.4m compared to €174.1m for the same period last year.

Turnover from its betting offices grew 11.2 per cent, and turnover from telebetting grew 10.3 per cent.

The company said growth in its online registrations had more than doubled to 26,846. Online turnover was €14 million which represents 7 per cent of group turnover, up from 2 per cent of group turnover for full year 2000

Group chief executive Mr Stewart Kenny said: "Good progress was made across all our businesses.The launch of online betting services into the UK market was a particular highlight and is performing satisfactorily.

"Our telephone betting service continues to expand, attracting new customers and increased revenues.Our licensed betting offices traded exceptionally well," he said.

"The opening of four new offices in Ireland and one in west London brings our total network to 124. The outlook for all our operations remains positive."
