Democratic Unionist Party leader the Rev Ian Paisley has described his party's meeting with British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair at Downing Street today as a "good start".

Dr Paisley and his team of MPs were putting their proposals for changes to the Belfast Agreement to Mr Blair.

Central to their plans is a recommendation that power should rest with the 108-member Stormont Assembly as a whole, rather than the 12 ministers who governed before the power-sharing regime collapsed nearly 18 months ago.

Dr Paisley spent more than an hour inside Downing Street before emerging to say there had been a "good start" to the talks.

"We have had our meeting with the prime minister, I think it was a very profitable meeting. Talks as far as we're concerned started today," he said.

He added: "The prime minister will of course give his comments on the proposals we are making. It's not for me to suggest what he is going to say."

Dr Paisley confirmed that the party's plans would be unveiled at a press conference tomorrow and that on Monday they would be meeting Northern Secretary Paul Murphy.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The important thing is that people are approaching the review in a positive way. Obviously they [the DUP] have put their proposals and we will reflect on them."
