Pakistan condemned as acts of terrorism today's bombings in the Indian financial capital of Bombay that killed at least 40 people.

"We deplore these attacks," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mr Masood Khan said. "We condemn all acts of terrorism and I think that such wanton targeting of civilians should be condemned in the strongest possible terms."

Two bombs exploded in the heart of Bombay, killing at least 40 people and wounding more than 100, police said. It was not immediately clear who planted the bombs, but previous attacks in India have been blamed on Muslim militants.

Earlier, Pakistani stocks ended down almost 1 per cent on news of the blasts because of fears that a recent thaw in Pakistan-India relations could be disrupted if New Delhi blamed the blasts on Islamic militants.
