A Palestinian man was found dead overnight from bullet wounds after an exchange of fire between the Israeli army and Palestinians yesterday, medical sources said.

Mr Taysir al-Amuri, a 45-year-old Bedouin man, had been shot by Israeli machine-gun bullets in the Beitunia region near Ramallah in the West Bank, the sources said. They said he he was not involved in the gunfight.

An exchange of missiles yesterday also left five injured as Israel responded to Palestinian mortar fire with rocket attacks.

Four civilians, including a 10 year-old child and a Palestinian policeman were injured in the Israeli attack.

But there was some sign of a slight ease of the crackdown in the occupied territories. An Israeli military spokesman today announced 1,000 Palestinians would be allowed to return to work in Israel.
