A Palestinian navy policeman was sentenced to death today for killing one of his colleagues and wounding five others in a shooting spree.
Abdelmeinem Ahmed Salah, 19, went berserk and shot six of his colleagues, one of them fatally, in their barracks in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Yunis at dawn today.
He surrendered himself to his superior officers and a military court sentenced him to death by firing squad a few hours later, the sources said.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat must confirm the death sentence for it to be carried out, they said.
The previous Palestinian executions go back to last January, when two men condemned for collaborating with Israel were shot dead at the same time in Gaza and in the West Bank town of Nablus in front of crowds of several hundred people.
They were the first executions of Palestinians for collaborating with Israel since the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in 1994.
Three other Palestinians have been executed since then, but for criminal offences.
