The latest events today, along with a Palestinian mortar bomb attack on an Israeli farming community near theGaza Strip overnight, were further signs that aUS-brokered truce was not working.
They prompted US Secretary of State Colin Powellto urge both sides to make an all-out effort to endalmost 10 months of bloodshed in which more than600 people have been killed.
"This is a time for all sides to do everything they canto get the violence down, create conditions of calm so that there is every incentive to move forwardstarting the Mitchell plan," Mr Powell told a newsconference.
He called on Israelis not to take provocative steps, including demolishing Palestinian homes andexpansion of Jewish settlements, and urgedPalestinians to do what they could to stop theviolence on their side.
