A Palestinian woman was killed in disputed circumstances in the West Bank city of Nablus today.
Palestinian medics said the 20-year-old woman was killed by an Israeli bullet as she stood on a rooftop and watched Israeli troops fire at Palestinian stonethrowers in a northern neighbourhood of the city this evening.
Military sources denied that soldiers were operating in that part of the city and said they knew of no incident of stonethrowing clashes in the area this afternoon or evening when the incident was reported to have taken place.
They said Palestinian gunmen had fired at troops operating in the centre of Nablus, but that the forces did not fire back.
Earlier in the day, soldiers wounded a Palestinian militant during a firefight with gunmen, Palestinian medics said.
Israeli forces which surround Nablus frequently raid parts of the city, a militant hotbed and the West Bank's main source of bombs used in suicide bombings and attacks against troops.
