The Palestinian UN delegate urged the Security Council, of which Ireland is a member, today to call an immediate meeting to discuss ways to protect Palestinians from Israeli soldiers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
"The goal of a meeting would be to take the necessary measures, including the establishment of a United Nations observer force, to contribute in providing protection for the Palestinian civilians," Nasser al-Kidwa said in a letter to Ukraine ambassador Mr Volodymyr Yelchenko, current president of the 15-nation Security Council.
There was no immediate response to the request. The council last December defeated an earlier Palestinian demand for a UN observer force to help calm the violence.
Israel, the occupying power, continues with its bloody military campaign against the Palestinian people, Mr al-Kidwa wrote.
His latest letter came hours after Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo asked for an urgent council session to discuss how to give Palestinians international protection against Israel's barbaric measures.
The Palestinians and their supporters on the council have been trying for months to whip up support for UN military observers and police to protect civilians.
