An Irish doctor has been awarded a papal knighthood by Pope John Paul II for his work over 35 years. Dr Desmond Carroll, who was born in Dublin and education at Belvedere College, has received the Knighthood of St Gregory for his work at Mount Alvernia Hospital, Guildford, and Holy Cross Hospital, Haslemore, both in Surrey, England. The award was presented to Dr Carroll, who is married with two children, by the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, Dr Cormac Murphy O'Connor.
