Parents at a Co Cork primary school are protesting today over the lack of investment at a school that was shut last week due to rat infestation.

Rahan National School was closed for three days last week when evidence of the infestation was discovered in the school's two pre-fabricated buildings.

Although a HSE inspector has yet to confirm the school is rat free, the school's principal, Gerry Lynch, said he was "99.9 per cent sure the rat problem was clear and sorted".

However, parents decided to keep their children away from school today in protest at the lack of capital investment in the 91 mixed-student school.

Mr Lynch told ireland.comthe two buildings were 22 years old and were second-hand when the school received them.

"From the outside there looks like there's not much going on, but on the inside you find leaking, corners peeling away, and you can see daylight coming through in a few places," said Mr Lynch.

"They're in need of urgent refurbishment, but we don't want to go down the road of further temporary buildings," he added.

There is one permanent building that can house one class at the school.
