Part of Waterford city centre remains closed to traffic today after a massive fire at a shop in the city last night.

AA roadwatch reports there is no access to Vulcan Street, Thomas Street, Penrose lane or parts of Anne Street and O'Connell Street between these junctions.

Also, part of the Quay outside Dooley's Hotel is closed to remove a burnt-out bus. Gardaí are directing traffic.

Last night fire brigade units from Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny, and as many as 50 firefighters, attended the fire in Thomas Street.

Smoke and flames estimated at around 60 feet bellowed from the building, which housed a kitchen outlet, as firefighters battled the fire for hours.

The fire is understood to have started at about 6pm in YouDecor, a DIY shop on Thomas Street before spreading along the roofs of various premises on adjoining O'Connell Street.

No injuries were reported.
