At their weekly meeting on Wednesday the Progressive Democrat parliamentary party made a surprise presentation to their colleague Liz O'Donnell, Minister of State at Foreign Affairs for her contribution to the Belfast Agreement. She received `The Messenger - the Dove of Peace', a carving of bog oak from Co Longford which is similar to that presented by former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds to Nelson Mandela in Ireland in 1990. There were speeches in praise of O'Donnell, whom some of the Unionists at the Stormont talks teasingly called Mrs Carson - her married name.
