Lagos - Nigeria's centrist People's Democratic Party (PDP) gained an early lead in local election results yesterday, establishing it as a major political force under the military's plan to restore democracy.
The PDP, led by a group of veteran politicians who opposed the late Mr Sani Abacha's dictatorship, won about 60 per cent of the vote after results from 380 of Nigeria's 774 local government councils where elections were held on Saturday.
