A new pedestrian bridge across the river Liffey at Chapelizod is expected to be open in two years, once the planning and tendering process is completed.
This follows the announcement of the winning design by Lord Mayor of Dublin Vincent Jackson at the Mansion House yesterday.
The chosen design, by Henchion Reuter Architects, is a single-span steel beam with a plate serving as a bridge deck.
The proposed bridge, which has a span of some 40 metres, will also incorporate a "trough" section reminiscent of a traditional boat, to minimise gradient and for structural reasons.
Described as a "marriage of architecture and engineering design" to create a "contemporary elegant solution for a pedestrian bridge in a pastoral setting", the bridge will establish a link from the new Liffey Valley Park on Chapelizod Road into the Phoenix Park.
The winning design was chosen after a limited competition in which proposals were requested from seven architectural and engineering teams.
The assessment took place on April 26th and one competitor was selected on a majority basis, according to Dublin City Council.
"It is intended to implement this proposal having obtained the necessary planning and statutory approvals," a spokesman said.
"Work will commence on receiving satisfactory tenders through competitive and statutory procedures. Contractor's work should take a year to complete." The entire process was expected to take two years, he added.
