A 67 year old man has been killed after he was struck by a car as he walked along the Southern Link dual carriageway in Cork city.
The man - who was living in Togher but originally from Watergrasshill in north Cork - was struck by a car between the Sarsfield Road and Bandon Road roundabouts at about 6.30pm.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was later removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.
The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was uninjured but was said to be badly shaken and was treated for shock at the scene. Gardaí closed off the inbound carriageway and put diversions in place to allow a forensic crash investigator examine the scene.
Gardaí in Togher appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or noticed the man walking along the dual carriageway to contact them on 021-4947120.
