Former employees of Peerless Rugs have today ended one of the longest running factory sit-ins in Irish history.

Former employees of Peerless Rugs have today ended one of the longest running factory sit-ins in Irish history.

All 64 workers at the Athy, Co Kildare-based company staged a sit-in in July 2001 after the parent company, Reffond, ceased production and put Peerless into receivership.

An undisclosed cash payment has now been agreed with the staff, although a number of former workers are unhappy with the terms of the settlement.

The Labour Court awarded the workers three weeks' pay for each year of service plus statutory entitlements in 2001, but the company refused to abide by the decision.
