An 82-year-old man who was seriously injured while cycling in Westport, Co Mayo, on December 29th died at the weekend in Mayo General Hospital.

Seán Neilus, of Fr Angelus Park, Westport, had been in intensive care since his bicycle collided with a car at Bridge Street while returning from Mass.

Gardaí in Westport are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact them on 098-50230.

Severe frost across the country led to a number of car crashes yesterday morning, causing serious injuries to two people.

The first of these was at Cloonad, near Portlaoise, Co Laois, at 9am yesterday when a car carrying four passengers was in collision with a lorry.

One of the male passengers in the car was seriously injured and rushed to Portlaoise hospital, where his condition was said to be "serious".

The three other passengers were also taken to hospital, as was the lorry driver. None of these sustained life-threatening injuries.

The main Portlaoise to Abbeyleix road was closed for some time as the cause of crash was being investigated. It reopened early yesterday afternoon.

A second crash occurred near Tuam, Co Galway, when a 29-year-old women was injured in a single-vehicle incident on the Athenry road at around midday.

The victim was reported to be in a serious condition at University College Hospital in Galway.
