Mr Bean star Rowan Atkinson (43) has become Britain's highest-paid actor, earning £11.25 million last year ahead of Lord Attenborough, Sir Alec Guinness and Sir Anthony Hopkins. He earned most of his fortune from starring in and producing Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie, which grossed £136 million, with about 7.5 per cent of the total takings going to Atkinson.
Attenborough, Guinness and Hopkins filled the next three places in the list, earning between £9.6 million and £3.75 million each in 1997. The study was compiled by Philip Beresford, author of the Sunday Times rich list, and Kevin Cahill, a business researcher.
A mystery man who paid £31,000 for a car number plate spelling out OASIS was Bonehead, the group's guitarist.
At the time of the car number-plate auction in Cheltenham last month, the identity of the OAS 15 buyer was a mystery. Speculation was rife that he had snapped up the distinctive plate on behalf of Noel or Liam Gallagher - but now Bonehead, real name Paul Arthurs, has been identified.
A small garden with an island centrepiece has been opened in Old Havana in memory of Princess Diana. Havana's city historian Eusebio Leal, a member of the Communist Party central committee, inaugurated the "Diana garden" with the island crowned by an obelisk.
