Quebec City - President Bush said the deaths of a US missionary and her baby in an apparently mistaken attack on their light aircraft over Peru was a "terrible tragedy".
"What took place in Peru is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families who have been affected," he said. He confirmed Washington had halted drug interdiction flights like the one that fed intelligence on the missionary's aircraft to the Peruvian warplane that shot it down.
The incident over the Peruvian jungle, in which the US missionary and her child lost their lives, took a dramatic turn on Saturday, when the US acknowledged it had been feeding intelligence to a Peruvian warplane that shot down the aircraft carrying the Americans.
