Mr Austin Finn, who was an award-winning photographer with the former Irish Press, was killed yesterday while on assignment at Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin.

Mr Finn was working as a freelance photographer with Independent Newspapers.

Gardai said he was knocked down by a car and died later at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin.

His wife, Kathleen, died four years ago. They had four children: Yvonne, Declan, Conor and Orla. Mr Finn (56) had lived at Kirkpatrick Avenue, Coolmine, Dublin.

Born in Naas, Co Kildare, he had more than 30 years' experience as a press photographer, twice winning the Press Photographer of the Year award, and once earning third place in the World Press Photographer of the year.

He was known also for his "roving camera" shots from around Dublin, which he took for the Irish Press Group.
