SIPTU is to lift its pickets on the East Link toll bridge in Dublin from 6 p.m. today to facilitate the fireworks display on the Liffey, writes Padraig Yeates. However, they are expected to resume picketing on Sunday morning.
Yesterday there was a confrontation between pickets and the company over the use of students as casual workers at the West Link bridge. At one stage gardai were called by National Toll Roads.
Subsequently pickets were scaled down but SIPTU branch secretary Mr Mick Halpin accused the company of using second-level students to break the strike. NTR said the students were studying at universities in Dublin.
