London - A Chilean air force Boeing 707 landed at an RAF base in Oxfordshire on Saturday ready to take the former dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet, home to his native country, Luke Holland reports. The 84-year-old general will find out today whether the human rights groups which are fighting to keep extradition proceedings against him alive will be granted leave to challenge his release.
Judge Maurice Kay is expected to make a ruling today on the last-ditch challenge by Belgium and six human rights organisations. The groups are seeking a judicial review of the decision by the Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, not to allow them to see medical reports which suggested Gen Pinochet was unfit to stand trial.
