An action plan to ensure the needs of vulnerable children can be met in a structured way was agreed at the inaugural meeting yesterday of the Cabinet Committee for Children. The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, chaired the meeting which approved the work programme and functions of the newly established National Children's Office.
The meeting also agreed the formation of the National Children's Advisory Council. This is an independent body which will be the primary source of advice and expertise on children's issues.
A national play and recreational policy is to be developed this year.
