The father of 18-year-old Karen Reilly, shot dead by British paratroopers eight years ago, has appealed for no violent reaction following yesterday's ruling quashing a charge of murder against Cpl Lee Clegg.

There was widespread violence in west Belfast when Clegg was released almost three years ago. But yesterday the dead girl's father, Sean Reilly, urged that any reaction be peaceful. "I want any protest, as far as possible, to be by the phone and the pen. I don't want any unrest at all," he said.

"The retrial gives the world's media the opportunity to hear the full facts with regard to this case. I sincerely hope that every newspaper and broadcast organisation will be there to hear exactly what happened on the night our daughter died." The Sinn Fein president, Mr Gerry Adams, described the decision to grant a retrial as "outrageous".
