Poland is reported to have reached an agreement on handing over command of an international military division in central Iraq to Spain.

Spanish newspaper El Mundotoday quotes Polish Defence Ministry sources saying the handover will be effective from June.

The newspaper cited Spanish Defence Ministry sources saying one of the options for was the deployment of a NATO force under a Spanish commander. Ministry officials were not immediately available for comment.

Spain has 1,300 troops stationed in south-central Iraq as part of the 9,000-strong international force. The division is based in mainly Shiite Muslim areas, seen as less restive than Sunni regions with stronger ties to Saddam Hussein's toppled government.
