Kisumu - Kenyan police detained an opposition legislator, broke up an open-air market and fired tear-gas canisters in the western city of Kisumu yesterday to prevent an anti-government rally from taking place.
The rally in Kisumu, an opposition stronghold on Lake Victoria, 300 km north-west of the capital, Nairobi, was supposed to be the first in a series of demonstrations the reformists announced earlier this week. They hope to pressure the government of President Daniel arap Moi (74), to repeal colonial era laws and enact constitutional reforms that they say are necessary for free and fair elections.
