Eleven police officers were injured in north Belfast violence last night.

Eleven police officers were injured in north Belfast violence last night.

Four were hurt when a stolen car collided with a police Land Rover on the New Lodge Road around 7pm. None of the injuries was serious.

Following the crash, the driver of the vehicle was arrested, but rioting then erupted as an ambulance was called to the scene.

Up to 150 local people gathered and attacked police, hurling the contents of a builder's skip at them, a PSNI spokesman said.

A female officer was cut about the face with glass, and a male colleague suffered abdominal injuries.

Police said CS spray was used in a bid to drive back the crowd.
